1. Method of damping the pressure peak which occurs at the end of the die filling phase in pressure die casting machines in which arranged between the piston rod (2) of the pressure piston (15) and that of the injection piston (14) there is a hydraulic damping device (16) with a damping space (9) whose inlet (30) may be closed and opened by a control piston (4) with a control edge (11), whereby the momentum of the control piston (4) is used when the injection piston (14) is decelerated to open the inlet (30) to the damping space (9) of the damping device (16), characterised in that the end face of the control piston (4) directed towards the injection piston (14) is acted on by a gaseous medium at ambient pressure, whereby during the return of the pressure piston (15) the pressure of the gaseous medium is increased and/or the pressure in the damping space (9) is reduced until the control edge (11) of the control piston (4) has again closed the inlet (30) to the damping space (9).
