The invention relates to a nuclear power station having a gas-cooled high temperature reactor of low power having spherical or block-shaped fuel elements, which is connected to a heat-using system and is accommodated in a steel pressure container. The steel pressure container is surrounded at a distance by a biological shield made of concrete in which a concrete cooling system equipped with a water-filled reservoir can be installed. In an accident (failure of the operational afterheat removal devices), the concrete cooling system can also be used for removing the afterheat. In the case of such an accident, in order to avoid a temperature overload of the steel pressure container as well as of other components, a spray installation is arranged, as an emergency cooling device for cooling the steel pressure chamber, between the latter and the biological shield, the spray installation being connected by means of redundantly designed supply pipes to a supply system, if necessary to the reservoir. The spray nozzles are so arranged, that as much as possible of the total surface of the steel pressure container is wetted.
