A description is given of a method for the laboratory detection of the erosion behaviour of undisturbed cohesive sediment (14) in a liquid medium (13) and of a device (10) for carrying out the method. In this case a sediment sample (14) is put into a vessel (11) containing a predetermined quantity of liquid medium (13). The water (13) is then stirred, the stirring speed being increased until the sediment (14) begins to erode. The apparatus (30) detecting the cloudiness of the resulting mixture (15) of liquid medium (13) and eroded sediment (15), for the determination of the degree of cloudiness, is arranged outside the first vessel (11) in a second vessel (16). The cloudiness of the mixture (15) is determined in correlation with the stirring speed of the first stirring equipment (24) and the propeller (28) connected thereto for the determination of the erosion rate.
