The invention relates to a process for exchanging a buried pipeline (16), in particular a seepage-water line for renovating recycling dumps, and to an apparatus for carrying out the process. The invention proposes to advance a high-strength assembly pipe (2) over and along the pipeline (16) which is to be exchanged, an apparatus breaking the pipeline up into fragments (19). Advancement proceeds, with the aid of a centring element, in the pipeline (16) which is to be exchanged. The pipeline pieces (19) are removed from the assembly pipe (2), and a new pipeline (21) is introduced under the protection of the assembly pipe (2). The assembly pipe (2) is then removed again. By means of this process, large pipeline portions can be exchanged in one piece, it being virtually impossible for the new pipeline (21) to be subjected to loading or damaged by the operating procedure.
