In a method for improving the exhaust performance of spark ignition engines, the output signal of a lambda probe, arranged in the exhaust port of the spark ignition engine, being fed to a regulator and the output voltage of the regulator forming a control variable for regulating the fuel-air ratio, after a transition from idling to partial load, the control variable is kept constant at a predetermined value for a first predetermined period. Thereafter the control variable is adjusted towards an increase of the air-fuel ratio for a second predetermined period, irrespective of the output signal of the lambda probe, whereupon the control is resumed.
