An apparatus for drying a liquid layer applied to a carrier material moving through a drying zone, which liquid layer contains evaporable solvent components and non-evaporable components, comprises a drying apparatus (1) with a vertical drying channel (2), through which the carrier-material band (4) runs in the longitudinal direction from the bottom upwards, to which the liquid layer to be dried is applied. The drying channel has a gas-/air-permeable channel covering surface (7), through which a gas flow, in particular a heated air flow, flows into the drying channel in the opposite direction to the running direction of the carrier-material band. The channel covering surface (7) converges downwards towards the vertically extending channel base surface (3). The channel inlet (27) is closed off by a drawing-off box (37), and the channel outlet (28) is closed off by a flowing-in box (39). The drawing-off and the flowing-in box are each sealed off from the front of the carrier-material band (4) by a respective lamella seal (38 and 40). IMAGE
