In the known nystagmus spectacles the doctor must look through a uniformly illuminated viewing glass pane in order to observe the eye movements of the patient. The bright/dark contrast between outer and inner space of the spectacles which is to prevent the patient from noticing contours in the external space, on the one hand, and to permit the doctor to look freely toward the brightly illuminated eyes of the patient, on the other hand, is not guaranteed. The novel device is to achieve an optimum bright/dark contrast. A uniformly illuminable surface (6) is imaged with the aid of a partially transparent mirror (4) in the field of vision of the patient, while the doctor observes the eyes of the patient from the transparent side of the partially transparent mirror (4). The mirror (4) and the illuminable surface (6) are arranged such that illumination of the eyes of the patient is sufficiently bright for the doctor, while it does not dazzle the patient.
