There are described shaped parts of metallic materials having a protective layer of oxygen-doped and/or sulphur-doped carbonitrides of transition metals of subgroups IV-VI. The protective layer has high stability and freedom from cracks under the conditions of foundry technology. Furthermore, a process is provided via which the protective layer can be deposited on the uncoated shaped parts. This process comprises the gas-phase reaction of halides of transition metals of subgroups IV-VI or of volatile, organic compounds of these metals with volatile, organic nitrogen compounds and with oxygen-containing and/or sulphur-containing, volatile compounds at a temperature in the range 400-900@C. The shaped parts of the invention are preferably used for casting and injection moulding of nonferrous metals.
