Apparatus for the disinfection of swimming pools by means of ultraviolet rays including a chlorinated part-stream, which part-stream is only introduced into stagnant pool zones in which experience has shown there is no regular periodic exchange of water via the swimming pool filters within the calculated circulation time. The invention indicates a way to very considerably decrease the use of chlorine in swimming pools as a result of which the known risks and pollution associated with chlorine are avoided. Since this is only possible with chemical-free sterilisation methods, the reduction of the chlorine can only be economically achieved via an ultraviolet sterilising apparatus. UV rays sterilise directly without further subsequent action in the water. Therefore, when they are used, on each purification circulation all of the water must actually be included which is not hydraulically possible. The invention indicates another way for the reliable use of UV sterilisation in swimming pools and thus avoids this difficulty. According to the teaching of the invention, up to 90% of the active chlorine used in swimming pools in a conventional manner can be dispensed with. The known annoyances such as chlorine odour and reddening of the eyes are also avoided. In addition, the risks due to transport, storage and use of this commercial poison are substantially eliminated and less chlorine passes into the environment.
