A myocardial probe for the treatment of rhythmic irregularities within deep heart tissue employs a laser light source (14), a flexible transmission cable (4) sheathed by tube (2) and a metal electrode (12) with lead (26) for the measurement of electric potential. The laser beam (22) takes the form of a hollow cone and the central electrode (12) is thus isolated from its effect. The resultant divergence of the laser beam (22) is optically controlled by directing its transmission via a gas or air filled space (6) before its emergence from the denser medium of the transparent cap (8). ADVANTAGE - Capable of deeper penetration, can treat larger area of tissue per unit time. Does not require surgery involving heart-lung bridge. Enables increased accuracy of laser dosing as result of precise potential measurement before, during and after treatment. External dia. of probe within 1.5 mm.
