The method of retrieving data in a data processing system involves setting or defining a retrieval value, receiving the request data for the retrieval, counting the retrieval value when the data retrieved is that sought, transferring interrupt data when the value reaches the defined value and interrupting the search on receipt of the interrupt data until a search command is received. The request data contain retrieval value data representing the retrieval value. The command can be a data search termination, search recommencement instruction or stop instruction.
