Random colouring action - uses loose bodies rolling on moving web to transfer medium from their rolling surfaces

To give a random colouring effect to paper or fabric webs, the web is passed continuously through an application zone where there are a number of loose bodies, close to each other, which are continuously or intermittently soaked with a dyestuff or etching solution to be transferred to the web. As the bodies move against the web by friction movement, the application of the medium to the web is random and uncontrolled. Pref. web is a woven fabric, to be treated with a dye solution or suspension. The treatment medium is applied to the transfer bodies from above, by spray or pouring or as drops. Before the web enters the application zone, it can be dyed with at least two different dyestuffs, to have an etching solution transferred by the bodies to act on one or a defined number of dyestuffs present in the web. The transfer bodies are irregular shaped stones, with a smooth and rounded surface pref. with a porous surface quality, and pref. pumice stone. ADVANTAGE - The technique gives a continuous colouring application, in a simple process, giving effects which cannot be reproduced.
