To build up the required stitching data, for a sewing machine, coordinate data are read in sequence for a coordinate input unit, for the initial needle position data to be calculated accordingly. Should the initial needle position data fall within a given range against second needle position data already inserted into the system, then the initial position data are replaced by the same data as the second needle position data. If new data matches existing data, a selection command is generated for a matched position to determine if the new data are within the range of the existing data or not, and the replaced data are stored in memory as control data for the automatic sewing machine. The coordinate data input unit has a scanner (10), and replaced data are shown on the display (26) with a different indentity mark from other pattern data. The matching initial needle position data with existing data are rendered inoperative, so that the remaining initial position data lie outside the preceding zones and the position selection command is maintained when the first needle position data are made ineffective and displayed. -
