The copier or printer consists of a main unit, which is divided into two parts, and a reproduction-unit (11) and a detector (40). The first part can swivel on the second part in order to open the appts. The reproduction-unit (11) can be removed from a predetermined position where it is mounted in the first part. - The detector (40) senses whether a reproduction-operation can take place, and it is started only when the first part is closed against the second part and when the reproduction-unit (11) is in place in the predetermined position in the first part.
