Crockery or glassware in a basket is housed in a chamber for washing and rinsing by spray arms. Separate wash and rinse pumps (100,40) are programme controlled by a microcomputer (120) to deliver water in a variety of sequences from hot, cold or mixed (50) sources. An electromagnetic linear actuating element (34) causes switching of the dishwasher upon a signal from the microcomputer. The programme enables the user to regulate the temperature and velocity of the sprays to suit the material being cleaned during prewash, main wash and rinse stages. Glassware, pottery and plastic utensils are thus safety and hygienically processed. -
