The invention relates to a method for stabilizing a stratospheric balloon at altitude between upper and lower levels during a plurality of day and night cycles. The method consists in equipping the stratospheric balloon 1 of the open type with variable volume, with a thermal trapping cap 7 disposed in the vicinity of its upper pole piece 4. This cap has reflective properties on the side facing the inside of the ball and preferably thermal insulation properties, and its surface is between 1% and 15% of the total surface of the balloon in the state of fullness, preferably between 2% and 5%. In the state of fullness, it does not appreciably modify the thermal balance of the balloon, however that at the levels lower than the state of reduced inflation, it limits the energy loss of the bubble by re-emission towards outside and avoids a descent irreversible of the balloon. The method of the invention makes it possible to stabilize a stratospheric balloon for a number of cycles which can be several tens.
