This device decodes binary words formed from a variable number of binary elements. It includes a first decoding circuit 20 furnished with a specified number of first input ports A1 and output ports 4 for delivering fixed-length decoded words, an input circuit 22 for presenting the specified number of binary elements to the said input ports. It furthermore includes a help circuit 23 for delivering to second input ports A2 of the said decoding circuit a supplementary information item resulting from the decoding of the above specified number of binary elements.
