The invention relates to a printer for printing serial bar codes on a continuous strip of recording elements using a thermal print head. This head 10 is excited by a series of pulses having a constant utilization factor for each line of information printed. However, the number of pulses in the series varies from one line to another depending on the status of the current printed line, namely line with bar or line with space, according to the status of at least one line immediately preceding the current line and at least one line immediately following the current line, and as a function of the number of bar lines previously printed. By varying the number of pulses applied to the thermal head and, consequently, the amount of energy applied to it, one minimizes the discontinuities appearing in the serial bar code and in any information, for example a character of the type which can be read by a human being, which is printed in the vicinity of said bar code. /P
