Muscle-exercise apparatus of the rower type, including oars and a carriage 5 capable of being displaced rearwards on a longitudinal support 4 when the user pulls on the oars 3 towards the rear, in which apparatus the carriage 5 is braked in its rearwards recoil movement by a resistance means which preferably ensures the return of the carriage to its initial position. The resistance means consists of the inclination of the longitudinal rectilinear support 4 carrying the carriage 5 at an angle alpha with respect to the horizontal and/or by an elastic return device, particularly an elastic band 7.
