The method for establishing the pressure/diameter relationship of an artery uses the measurement results of a non-invasive sensor 3 for the diameter of the artery, for example on the humeral artery, and a non-invasive sensor 4 for the blood pressure, for example carried out at the end of a finger. With the measurement locations separated by a distance DELTA x, the method provides for correction of the pressure measurements to what they would be if they were carried out at the location where the diameter measurements were carried out. The method furthermore provides for a correction taking account of the mechanical properties of the artery, defined by parameters alpha , beta , gamma ,... which are calculated, if required by successive iterations, until the pressure/diameter curve appears free from any measurement artifice (hysteresis). The pressure/diameter relationship makes it possible to calculate the mechanical properties of the arteries, in particular using curves of compliance and a speed of propagation as a function of the pressure.
