A radial electric field of a desired magnitude and configuration is createdhroughout a substantial portion of the cross- section of the plasma of a tokamak. The radial electric field is created by injection of a unidirectional electron beam. The magnitude and configuration of the radial electric field may be controlled by the strength of the toroidal magnetic field of the tokamak.
