PURPOSE:To simplify the construction by using low speed and high speed cams and rocker arms, and incorporating in the high speed rocker arm, a switching means adapted to insert a piston in a space between a shaft and a rocker arm. CONSTITUTION:A low speed rocker arm 15 with a roller is obliquely installed right under speed cams 13 formed in positions facing to the intake valves 3 pot cylinder on a cam shaft 11, with one end thereof fitted to a rocker shaft 12. A high speed rocker arm 17 is installed right under a high speed cam 14 disposed between two low speed cams 13, with one end thereof fitted to the rocker shaft 12. The other end of the high speed rocker arm 17 is urged by a spring means 18, and switching means 30 is built in the rocker arm 17. A piston 34 is advanced and retreated by oil pressure to be engaged with and disengaged from a shaft 21, whereby the high speed rocker arm 17 is separated from and connected to the lower speed rocker arm 15.
