PURPOSE:To reduce a measuring time and improve an accuracy by confirming the accuracy of a plug gage by a direct measurement method utilizing a horizontal type precision length measuring instrument. CONSTITUTION:A measuring head 2 is slidably and rotatably held by a substrate 4 via a measuring head holder 3. A plunger A 21 projects from one end face of the measuring head 2 on a side opposed to a measuring portion holder 5. A plunger 51 is slidable with respect to the plunger A 21 via coupling means 6. The other end of the plunger 51 is provided with a measuring terminal 71 for directly measuring an object to be measured. The fine movement terminal 86 of fine movement means 8 is fixedly arranged on the plunger 51. A measuring range adjusting plate 83 is slidably arranged on the upper portions of holding posts 53 and 54 and, after the appropriate position of the object to be measured is adjusted, fixed to the holding post 53.
