PURPOSE: To obtain an effective nonlinear optical material by selecting a material satisfying a specified condition and having a molecular structure in which an electron donating group D and an electron withdrawing group of CN group are included and these groups are connected via an electron transfer system. CONSTITUTION: This material has such a molecular structure that an electron donating group D and an electron withdrawing group of CN group are included and these groups are connected with each other via an electron transfer system. The material satisfies the formula, wherein (n) is 3 or 4. Thereby, the obtd. material does not absorb visible and near infrared rays but has an extremely high coefft. β near the infrared region. This quality is required for a material to be used for an electro-optical device. In the ground state, the material contains molecules having a low conjugate double bond state.
