PURPOSE:To obtain the copolymer capable of providing a filler for liquid chromatography having excellent separation performance by sulfonation by polymerizing a mixture of styrene and divinylbenzene in an aqueous solution containing specific amounts of water soluble high-molecular substance and surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of styrene and divinylbenzene is polymerized in an aqueous solution containing =1.0X10-2g/ml, preferably 1.0X10-2 to 4.5X10-2g/ml water soluble high-molecular substance (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol) and =2.5X10-4g/ml, preferably 2.5X10-4 to 7.5X10-4g/ml surfactant (e.g. sodium dodecylsulfate), preferably while stirring at rotation speed of 1500 times/min to readily provide the aimed copolymer having fine-grain size, preferably 1-10mum grain size.
