PURPOSE:To provide resistance to wear and superior effect by using titanium and titanium alloy, light in weight and of high strength, and applying surface hardening treatment such as carburizing, hardening, temperating and the like. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a titanium or a titanium alloy material is covered with steel of hardness HV500 or more through an intermediate covering layer selected out of Ta, Ni, Nb and alloy of said elements. A composite material of superior life of rolling fatigue for a mechanical structure is manufactured by said process. The surface hardening treatment is applied to some of the surface of steel. Said intermediate covering layer is for bonding titanium or titanium alloy material with steel, and several tens - several hundreds mum thickness is sufficient, and if it is too thick, it is not preferable from the viewpoint of rolling fatigue. The hardness of the covering material is adjusted to required hardness by the surface hardening treatment and is limited to HV500 or over from the viewpoint of resistance to wear and the life of rolling fatigue.
