PURPOSE:To reduce the area of using a characteristic correction data and to correct level correction operation by inserting a start signal and a reference pulse changing based on a sequence after the start signal to a recording video signal respectively and using the reference level and a reproduced reference pulse generated from the start signal in response to the reproduced reference pulse so as to correct the level. CONSTITUTION:A reference pulse train generated from a reference pulse generating means 2 based on a prescribed order and a start signal from a start signal generating means 10 are inserted in a recording video signal respectively and recorded by a reference data insertion means 4 and a level correction means 8 identifies the start signal from the reproduced video signal and applies level correction corresponding to the reference pulse inserted at recording in the order from the succeeding reproduced reference pulse. Thus, the operating area of the characteristic correction data is reduced and correct level correction is attained.
