PURPOSE:To obtain the practicable photochromism optical recording element by recording and erasing information by subjecting a photochromic material layer contg. a transition metal element to photoirradiation while impressing an external electric field thereto. CONSTITUTION:The photochromic material layer 4 consisting of oxide ceramics contg. the transition metal element as an electron donative body is held in placed by two base material oxide ceramics layers 3, 5 without contg. the transition metal element and electrodes 2, 6 are provided on these outside layers. While an external electric field is impressed to the phototchromic material layer 4, the layer is subjected to the photoirradiation and while the recombination of the electrons stimulated by the photoirradiation is suppressed, the recording the erasing of the information are executed by utilizing the change in the light absorbance or reflectivity by the photoirradiation. The optical disk of an erasable type which allows ultra-high-density optical recording and is high in response speed and wide in service temp. is obtd. in this way.
