PURPOSE:To cool the shell of a blast furnace efficiently according to a temp. condition by atomizing a prescribed volume of water, mixing the mist thereof with compressed air subjected to pressure regulation and blowing the mixture to the shell. CONSTITUTION:The surface temp. of the shell 1 is measured with a temp. measuring instrument 2 and the value thereof is inputted to a control relay 8-1. A valve V7 of a pneumatic piping system 7 for air cooling opens and the compressed air is blown from a cooling pipe via a pneumatic piping 7-1 and a 3-way joint 9 when the surface temp. of the shell increases to a prescribed value or above. Valves V5, V6 of a pneumatic piping system 5 for mist and a water piping system 6 open when the surface temp. of the shell increases further. Then 0.5-5kg/cm2 compressed air is supplied at 1-10Nm3/min and water at 0.1-1l/min for each 1m2 of the shell to a mist nozzle 4 from a pneumatic piping 5-1 and a water piping 6-1. The water is made into mist and the mist having 10-150mu grain size is blown from the cooling pipe 3 via the joint 9.
