NEW MATERIAL:A gamma-pyrone-3-carboxamide derivative expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are 1-11C alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl or phenyl which may be substituted; R3 is H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl or phenyl which may be substituted; or R2 and R3 together represent (CH2)m ((m) is 3 or 4); R4 and R5 may be same or different and each are H or lower alkyl; R6 is phenyl which may be substituted]. EXAMPLE:5-Allyl-2,6-dimethyl-N-(2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propenyl)-4-oxo-4H -pyran- carboxamide. USE:Useful as a plant growth retardant. PREPARATION:For example, a compound expressed by formula II (R7 is alkyl) is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III (R8 is alkyl, etc.) in the presence of molecular sieves to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
