PURPOSE:To save the amount of coke to be used in the reduction of briquettes of a powdered mixture of oxides of elements having high activity to oxygen with a carbonaceous starting material in a shaft furnace by coating the briquettes with outer layers of a carbonaceous starting material to provide a double-layered structure. CONSTITUTION:Oxides of elements having high activity to oxygen and a carbonaceous starting material are pulverized, mixed and briquetted. The briquettes are coated with outer layers of a carbonaceous starting material to provide a double-layered structure. The coated briquettes are reduced in a shaft furnace. Thus, a hardly reducible element, or an alloy of the elements or carbides of the elements is obtd., and the amount of coke to be used is saved.
