PURPOSE:To provide the subject repellent capable of maintaining an antifouling activity for a long period in a small content without the environmental pollution of heavy metals and injurious elements, containing an N-substituted benzimidazole-1-imidazole or triazole derivative as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:The subject repellent contains a compound of the formula (X is H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; Z is methine or N; m and n are 0-2) as an active ingredient. The repellent is employed for controlling shellfish and algae adhering to and multiplying on underwater articles such as the bottoms of marine vessels, fish nets, devices such as buoys placed in sea water, underwater structures such as the attachments of dams or inlet channels for the steam condenser-cooling water of thermal power stations or for the heat exchanger-cooling water of petrochemical industry which always contacts with the water, does not contain an organic tin compound, etc., and is highly safe.
