In a method and an apparatus for continuous stroke monitoring of the rammer rods of a ramming machine for producing a compacted coal cake in a coking plant, it is proposed that the up and/or down movement of a rammer be sensed by means of a rotary element placed against the rammer rod and that the rotational speed of the rotary element be measured and continuously compared with a preset desired value.
