PURPOSE:To count automatically the time required to pass between specific marked lines as for the liquid surface of liquid which moves in a manometer by providing detecting means at positions corresponding to plural marked lines of a manometer part. CONSTITUTION:A standard sample is put in a cell where one sheet of filter paper is laid first and a compressed body is generated by a plunger. Then a permeation cell is fitted hermetically to the upper part of the manometer 3 at a cell plunger part 1. Then an active tap 6 is opened and suction valve 4 is opened gradually; when the 1st optical sensor 8A detects the liquid level in the manometer 3 reaches the 1st marked line A, the active tap 6 is closed. Then when the 2nd optical sensor 8B detects the meniscus bottom part of the liquid in the manometer 3 reaches the 2nd marked line B, the time counting is started and then the time is counted continuously until the 3rd optical sensor 8C detects the meniscus bottom part of the liquid reaches the 3rd marked line C. Then the result is displayed automatically on a digital time counting display device 10.
