PURPOSE:To obtain a film which is controlled in level and directivity of a liquid crystalline high polymer by heating and cooling the laminate of a plastic substrate subjected to a rubbing treatment and a coating liquid of a liquid crystalline high polymer soln. CONSTITUTION:The side of a plastic film where the film comes into contact with a liquid crystal is subjected to the rubbing treatment having the specific directivity and the film or coated film of a high-polymer compd. exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystallinity is brought into tight contact with the rubbing- treated surface thereof. The molecules of the liquid crystalline high polymer in contact with the rubbin-treated surface of the plastic substrate are oriented in parallel with the direction of the rubbing executed on the substrate by execut ing the orientation heat treatment at the temp above the glass transition point of the liquid crystalline high polymer and below the transition temp to the isotropic plase. The substrate is cooled to the temp. below the glass transition point to immobilize the orientation state when the orientation in this liquid crystal state is completed. The oriented liquid crystalline high-polymer film is obtd. in this way and the uniform and transparent film of monodomains having the excellent optical properties is obtd. in this way.
