Method and apparatus for removal of microorganisms during microfiltration of a material on a primary membrane filter without significant formation of a secondary membrane, in which oppositely directed brief pressure pulses are exerted on the primary membrane at frequent intervals and in which a flow of output material is maintained so that it runs along the surface of the primary membrane. A well-defined membrane filter pore size is obtained, which ensures uniform and effective removal of microorganisms.
