PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high purity and yield with a simple process, by reacting 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene with bromine in a 4-8C straight and/or branched chain alcohol in the presence of a boron trifluoride complex salt and neutralizing the reaction product with a non-aqueous neutralizing agent. CONSTITUTION:1,5,9-Cyclododecatriene is brominated by reacting with bromine in an organic solvent selected from 4-8C straight-chain alcohol, 4-8C branched- chain alcohol or their mixture in the presence of a boron trifluoride complex salt (e.g. boron trifluoride ether complex salt, boron trifluoride phenol complex salt, boron trifluoride amine complex salt, boron trifluoride methanol complex salt, etc.) as a catalyst. The bromination product is neutralized with a non- aqueous neutralizing agent such as sodium or potassium alcoholate alcohol solution, amine ammonia or their alcohol solution. The titled compound useful as a flame-retardant for polyolefins can be produced by this process in high purity and yield without using complicate steps.
