The glass items (2) pass along (V) on a conveyor belt (3), on rollers (4,5) driven by a motor (5), which has a tachometer. As each item passes between a light source (7) and a photocell (8) a pulse (10) is sent to a programmable delay circuit (16,19). The delay circuit output is used to operate a flash lamp (12) opposite a video camera (14) as the detected item passes through its field or view (13). The video signal is compared (21) with a reference signal and if unsatisfactory a signal (22) operates a rejection solenoid (15) via another programmable delay (23,25). @(13pp Dwg.No.1/4)@.
