This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a copper-chromium catalyst for the hydrolysis of nitriles and amides in which the copper and the chromium are present in the reduced form, the catalyst being used in reactors where the said reaction is performed in suspension together with nitriles and water. In general the method is characterized by the reduction of copper and chromium compounds in a chromium proportion of 0 to 0.20 by mass, through the addition of an aldehyde to a mixture of an aqueous-alcoholic solution of a hydroxide of an alkali metal and copper and chromium compounds.
