The purification entails, in particular, removal of polymers, suspended matter, phosphates and/or COD, in particular the treatment of centrifuged or filtered water which results from the dewatering of suspended sludge removed from water courses for purification and which is to be returned to water courses. In order to improve the treatment of water, in particular centrifuged or filtered water from the removal of sludge from water courses, it is proposed that the water, in particular the centrifuged or filtered water, be mixed with one or more flocculants (43) which either have a negatively charged surface or form negatively charged colloids after addition of water, preferably sodium aluminate and/or bentonite, and subsequently a flocculation and finally a sand filtration (40) are carried out, the flocculated phase composed of flocculant particles, polymers, oil particles and suspended matter being returned to the treatment in the form of a flocculant sludge as contact sludge.
