TRUNKED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM WITHNATIONWIDE ROAMING CAPABILITYAbstractSelected regional trunking systems are equippedwith telephone interconnect capability and provided withlocal computers (106), which communicate with a nationalhub computer (110). At each selected trunking system,several IDs are reserved as "roaming IDs" to betemporarily assigned to roaming subscribers (112). Whena subscriber determines that it has roamed into a newtrunked system, it requests a roaming ID. A roaming IDis assigned and transmitted to the subscriber, whichthereafter operates within the new trunked system usingits roaming ID. The roaming assignment is alsotransmitted to the national hub computer (110) so thatinterconnect calls may be appropriately properlyforwarded. The roaming subscriber (112) continues tooperate under the assigned roaming ID until it roams outof the range of the current system and into yet anothertrunked system. In this way, the subscribers may roamfrom system to system.
