METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING DICTATION ONOR TRANSCRIPTION FROM RECORDING UNITS IN ADICTATION SYSTEMABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA dictation system having two or more recordingunits, each selectively operable as a dictation unit or atranscription unit, and including a selector for selecting arespective unit for recording or transcription. A unitselected for recording dictation is enabled if a recordmedium therein is ready, or initialized, for recording;otherwise the unit is enabled for transcription. While oneunit operates to record dictation, the other may operatesimultaneously to transcribe previously recorded dictation.In a system having at least three recording units, at leasttwo are identified with respective, particular identitiesand the third is designated a spare recording unit. After apredetermined amount of dictation has been recorded on anyone of the identified recording units, further dictationdestined for that identified unit is recorded on the spareunit, and the identity of the spare unit is changed over tobe equal to the identity of the recording unit for whichdictation had been intended. In such a system, the originalidentities of the at least two recording units areestablished in the order in which those units areinitialized, or made ready, for dictation.
