ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention relates to a zirconia process for preparing stabilized by calcining a mixture of hydroxide zir-conium and a stabilizing element hydroxide selected from the group consisting of yttrium and cerium, then crushing or grinding and sifting of the stabilized zirconia obtained, characterized in that the mixture of hydroxides of zirconium and stabilizing element is obtained by: a) neutra-lisation with ammonia or an alkali hydroxide at a pH of at least 7 of a mixture of: an aqueous suspension of zirconium fluosulfate particles containing 5 to 35% by weight of Zr expressed as ZrO2, pH of said suspension ranging from 0 to 3 approximately, and an aqueous solution a salt of a stabilizing element containing from 5 to 20% by weight of stabilizer expressed as oxide of said element member, the relative amounts of aqueous suspension of zirconium fluosulfate and aqueous solution of stabilizing element salt corresponding to a molar oxide ratio of stabilizing element / ZrO2 of the order of 1/100 to 20/100; b) separation by filtration of the mixture of hydroxides obtained, then washing to a pH of that of the neutralization by water or water containing ammonia or alkaline hydroxide, followed by a refiltra tion, c) and, if desired, washing (s) of the mixture of hydroxides obtained in the preceding step by resuspending said mixture of hydroxides in an aqueous solution of nitrile-than or hydrochloric acid, the pH of the suspension obtained to be higher than the pH of dissolution of the hydroxide of the stabilizing ele ment, and not to exceed 8, followed (s) by filtration. This method enables in particular the preparation of stabilized zirconias from a non-water-soluble zirconium salt. The stabilized zirconia serve any party-larly in the preparation of ceramics.
