ABSTRACTA glow discharge starter having an hermeticallysealed envelope of vitreous material, a seal located atone end thereof and containing an ionizable medium. Apair of electrical conductors extend through the sealand terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair ofelectrodes within the envelope. At least one of theelectrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. Acoating comprising lanthanum, nickel and at least oneradioactive dopant is disposed on a surface within theenvelope. The coating is sufficient to reduce the darkeffect by improving the dark starting of the glowdischarge starter.
