APPARATUS AND PROCESS FOR OXYGENATION OFLIQUID STATE DISSOLVED OXYGEN-CARRYING FORMULATIONAbstract of the DisclosurePerfluorocarbon emulsion formulations are oxygenatedprior to use by means of a portable oxygenation system.The blood substitute is in a closed container or bag. Anoxygen-containing gas is introduced into the bag from aseparate container. The bag is continuously agitated for asufficient time to increase the PO2 Of the perfluorocarbonemulsion formulations to a desired pressure, e.g., to atleast 600 mmHg. In one embodiment, the system used foroxygenation of the perfluorocarbon emulsion formulationscomprises a small tank for gas having an inlet port and anoutlet port fitted with shut-off valves. The outlet portis adapted to be connected to a filter which, in turn, isadapted to be connected to the inlet port of a three-wayvalve. The primary outlet of the three-way valve isadapted to mount a hypodermic needle which is adapted to bepushed through a rubber septum in a port of the bag tocommunicate with the interior of the bag. The tank isadapted to be filled with oxygen-containing gas, such ascarbogen, from a main gas source under pressure. The tank,filter, three-way valve and needle arrangement areconnected in series, and the oxygen-containing gas ispermitted to flow from the tank into the bag holding theemulsion formulation. After the gas is introduced into thebag, the three-way valve is closed to prevent leakage ofthe gas from the container. The container is then agitatedto oxygenate the emulsion formulation.
