ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREMethods and apparatus for creating and editingmultidirectional or multidimensional text including a string ofcodes defining a text and a parser means responsive to operationof the editing means for reading the codes of the string andparsing the codes into encoded units, wherein each encoded unit iscomprised of a group of codes defining a group of one or morecharacters that are positioned in an expression as a unit. Thecodes in the string of codes representing a text include charactercodes representing the characters of symbols of the text andoperator codes defining properties of the text. Operator codesinclude structural operators defining organizational relationshipsbetween the units of the text. Operator codes include scriptoperators defining a script unit located in a script position withrespect to a base unit, wherein each script unit is defined as aunit having a baseline oriented with respect to the baseline ofthe base unit and offset from the baseline of the base unit by aselected distance and wherein the location of the script unitbaseline relative to the base unit is determined by the scriptoperator code. The baseline of a script unit may be offset toeither side of the baseline of the base unit and the script unitbaseline may be located in a position preceding the base unit,adjacent to the base unit, or following the base unit. Operatorcodes further include line split operators, wherein each linesplit operator defines a group of N units wherein the startinglocations of the N units are oriented in a line vertical to abaseline.
