The invention relates to a process and a device for determining the optimal training speed for throwing, shooting or passing in throwing sports or ball games. The distance between the passing site and the target is established. A target speed for a given number of throws, shots or the like which constitutes a measurement run is allocated to the trainee. This target speed is afresh for consecutive runs. For each run, the distances between the points of impact and the target are measured or calculated, in particular statistically combined or evaluated. The angular error on throwing or shooting is calculated from the distances between the points of impact and the target. The optimal training speed is the speed, chosen or determined from the target speeds, at which the angular error on throwing or shooting is a minimum.
