The invention relates to a winder for winding and unwinding metal strips with strip tensioning forces between 10 kN and 1000 kN. The winder consists of an expandable winding drum (1) supported on a hollow shaft (2) which is mounted in a stator (3). A driving rod (5) for actuating the expandable winding drum (1) passes through the hollow shaft (2). The driving rod (5) is the piston rod of a control cylinder (4) mounted on the opposite end of the hollow shaft (2) to the winding drum (1). To reduce the moment of inertia of the winder, to prevent play in the drive and to simplify the structure of the drum, the drive for the winder consists of a motor mounted in the stator (3) between the bearings (10, 11) of the hollow shaft (2), the rotor (13) of the motor being seated on the hollow shaft (2).
