Quaternary ammonium halide salts of cinnamate esters as sunscreen agents and compositions containing same

Higher alkyl quaternary halide salts of cinnamate esters of the general formula I CHEM wherein R1 is an alkyl group containing from one to four carbon atoms; R2 is an alkyl group containing from one to six carbon atoms; R3 is alkylene containing from two to six carbon atoms; R4 is an alkyl group containing from sixteen to twenty-two carbon atoms; and X- is a halogen anion are useful as sunscreen agents. Sunscreen compositions containing same and methods of using are provided.
