The invention relates to an environmentally advantageous process for the preparation of weakly acidic cation exchange resins by saponification of crosslinked acrylonitrile bead polymers, using an alkaline saponifying agent at elevated temperature, wherein the bead polymer and the alkaline saponifying agent are combined only at elevated temperature.
